چکیده

The influence of prolactin and various other pituitary hormones on the initiation and maintenance of lactation has been the subject of frequent investigations during the past few decades (l-5). Species variation and the complexities inherent in ablation and substitution experiments in tivo have led to a vast and conflicting literature (6). Studies of rat mammary gland slices have indicated that glucose utilization and incorporation into fatty acids increase from gestation to lactation (7, 8), that the hesose monophosphate pathway is operative (9, lo), and that prolactin added in vitro increases tissue respiration (11)) osidation of Cland Q-labeled glucose (12, 13), and incorporation of glucose into lipid (13). The present study demonstrates an effect in vitro of prolactin, adrenocorticotropin, and growth hormone on glucose metabolism of rat mammary gland slices. In addition, the influence of these hormones on glucose metabolism at various stages of physiological activity of mammary tissue are compared.

Studies of anterior pituitary tissue in vitro: effects of insulin and experimental diabetes mellitus upon carbohydrate metabolism.

Since the classical experiments of Houssay and Biasotti (1), Evans, Meyer, Simpson and Reichert (2), Young (3), and Long and Lukens (4), the diabetogenic potential of pituitary hormones has been amply documented (5). However, the metabolism of glucose by the pituitary has received but little examination (6-9), and the authors have been unable to find any published studies of the hormonal determ...

Pectic Acid Effects on Prolactin Secretion in GH3/B6 Rat Pituitary Cell Line

Background: Pectic acid extracted from plants increases the secretion of prolactin (PRL) when injected intravenously into ewes or fed to rats. Fragments of ewe hypophysis and lactating rabbit mammary gland incubated in vitro in the presence of pectic acid secreted more PRL and caseins compared to the controls. However, it is not known whether pectic acid directly stimulates PRL secretion in pi...

Effects of oxytocin, vasopressin, and acetylcholine on glucose metabolism in mammary tissue in vitro.

The mammary gland of the rat undergoes profound metabolic changes after parturition. The rate of oxygen uptake, the respiratory quotient (l), and the activity of the phosphogluconic acid oxidative pathway increase markedly (2, 3). These alterations disappear within 1 or 2 days after the suckling young are weaned. The hormonal “environment” also changes at these times. After parturition, the sou...

Effect of methimazole-induced hypothyroidism on serum levels of LH and testosterone and weights of testes and thyroid gland in rat

Introduction: Thyroid hormones play an important role in the regulation of metabolism, maturity and reproduction. Thyroid dysfunction affects almost all endocrine glands such as pituitary and testis. The aim of this study was to investigate alterations of testosterone and luteinizing hormone (LH) serum levels as well as weights of thyroid gland and testes in methimazole (MMI)-induced hypothy...

A brief review of rat thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and introduction to Shibayagi’s rat TSH ELISA KIT

What is TSH? TSH is produced and secreted by basophilic cells called “thyrotrophs” in the anterior pituitary gland of vertebrates from fishes to mammals. TSH is also called thyrotropic hormone or thyrotropin. TSH acts on thyroid gland, adipose tissue, eye, and so on. TSH receptor penetrates the cell membrane 7 times and is coupled with G-protein-PKA system. TSH increases the release of thyroid ...
